What is Global Understanding?

Global Understanding (GU) is a virtual and physical exchange programme that has been running since 2011. We use state-of-the-art videoconferencing equipment in a specially designed classroom to link students in Entel with students in other schools around the world.

WHY CHOOSE
GLOBAL
UNDERSTANDING?
01
12 GU partners
Our first partnership was with North Carolina School of Science and Maths in Durham, NC, USA. From this moment, the benefit of GU was recognised by the school leadership and has since grown to now have 12 GU partners in 8 countries. Our GU classes are offered English, German and Japanese.
02
Provide opportunities for studying abroad
Students from all grades in the junior high and senior high school can join a GU programme. This means that nearly 25% of the student body can benefit from Global Understanding every academic year. Our links are not only virtual, and we have study abroad opportunities with our GU partners.
03
Cultivate cross-cultural understanding and communication skills
Over a number of weeks in a 40-to-60-minute class, the students share and discuss a wide range of topics and themes to build their intercultural understanding and communication skills. Some of the topics we discuss are: Our school, Food, Festivals, The Internet, Popular brands.
04
Collaboratively research, share, and create products
We also have special PBL based links on the UN Sustainable Development Goals with UCIS, Thailand and art with Krosno School of Art and Design, Poland. During these links, students collaborate with their partners to research, share and create a product.

GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING CULTURE DAY
GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING SHOWCASE
The GU Culture Day is a campus wide activity to celebrate and recognise the diversity we have on our campus. With links in 9 different countries and teachers from over 10 nationalities, we have 15 booths where students and teachers share their local foods, play games and have quizzes.
The event also brings together our partners in the Global Understanding Forum. Students from different parts of the world present their culture and share their thoughts on an issue. Recent events have explored our intangible cultural heritage, with presentations about British Tea, USA Basketball and Liangzhu history in Hangzhou, and culture in motion which explored the ways in which cultures influence each other.
The GU Showcase is an annual event where students share what they've learned from their links with others. The event brings together all the GU students - past and present - to talk about cultural differences and our global understanding.
